RETINA

The department at Gagana Eye Hospital manages different conditions affecting retina that are not amenable to surgical treatment. Other non-surgical treatments are recommended such as medication (drugs, eye drops, injections) and laser treatment. The conditions managed by the department include Diabetic Retinopathy, Hypertensive Retinopathy, Macular degeneration and other retinal disorders. For precise diagnosis and successful treatment, the department is well equipped with Ophthalmic imaging devices and technologies. A special team of Optometrists and staff are at your services to render comprehensive and compassionate care.

Diabetic Retinopathy:

Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the vision. Due to high blood sugar levels the blood vessels in the retina of the eye are affected resulting in blurred vision. Diabetic retinopathy could be a threat to your sight if left undiagnosed and untreated. Diabetic retinopathy is a common eye disorder in people having type-I, type-II diabetes. Regular screening and early detection can help you fight against vision loss.

Non-proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NDPR):

This stage is considered as an early stage of diabetes and the eye is not capable of producing new blood vessels. The damaged blood vessels leak blood and fluid in the eye causing swelling. This leads to a condition called macular edema.

Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy( PDR):

This is the advanced stage of diabetes in which new blood vessels grow within the retina. This results in obstruction of the vision.

Symptoms
  • Difficulty in seeing at nights
  • Seeing floaters / dark spots
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty in distinguishing colours.
  • Partial or complete vision loss.
Treatment

Early stages of Diabetic Retinopathy have limited options. The possible treatments are Scattered Photocoagulation, Vitrectomy, Focal Coagulation.

Hypertensive Retinopathy

Hypertensive Retinopathy has short and long term implications on patients' overall healthcare. When blood pressure is high the retina gets damaged. Prolonged hypertension retinopathy causes oozing of blood. Eventually leading to vision loss. Mild hypertension may damage the blood vessels if left untreated.

Symptoms
  • Reduced Vision
  • Swelling of Eye
  • Bursting of the Blood Vessels
  • Blurred or Double Vision
  • Cotton Wool Spots
Treatment

This condition can be controlled by having control on blood pressure. Certain complications can be treated with medication (Beta-Blockers, Diuretics, ACE inhibitors) can help in early detection. In prolonged and severe conditions, irreversible eye damage is caused resulting in loss of vision.
